Get to know some of the people in PEOPLE
Ashley Brown, graduating senior May 2006 from Memorial High School in Madison
Ashley Brown — "We were all in the same grade, but we were very different from each other," says Ashley Brown, now a senior at Memorial High School in Madison. Clutching their backpacks, 60 pioneering sixth-graders tentatively approached the first breakfast that would start their six-year journey together. Aside from their age, however, they did have something else in common. Something you couldn't see on the surface. A teacher or counselor had noticed their academic or leadership potential and recommended they participate in an innovative pre-college enrichment experience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Martinez White, graduating senior May 2006 from Solomon Juneau High School in Milwaukee
Martinez White — "You're putting us in foster care if Juneau is closed," Martinez White told the Milwaukee School Board referring to teachers at his high school as parent figures and to the innoivative and high-quality programs offered. White was unsucessful in saving his high school from budget cutbacks, but that is not stopping him from striving for justice and perfection in everything he does. Read more.
Sergio Barbosa-Mireles, graduating senior May 2006 from Deforest High School
Sergio Barbosa-Mireles — "I come from a family that emphasizes staying true to yourself. Do what you love and don't ever put yourself in a position where you're just doing something for someone else. All the pressure has come from me." Barbosa-Mireles is an outstanding athlete and scholar. He was debating whether to accept an offer from Cornell or Stanford at the time this article was written. Tashina Guzman, sophomore Menominee Indian High School in Keshena
Tashina Guzman — This would be Tashina's first time away from home and the Menominee Indian Reservation all by herself. What would Madison be like? Would it be hard to make new friends? Tashina has big goals for herself and she'll achieve them "because of the love and encouragement of my family." Read more.
Bonnie Jean Williams, graduating senior UW-Madison, May 2006
Bonnie Jean Williams — In 1999 the first group of 66 Milwaukee high school students entered the PEOPLE program. Bonnie Jean was one of them. In May 2006, she is among the first PEOPLE cohort to graduate with degrees in journalism and African American Studies. Next stop...graduate school as Bonnie Jean has been admitted into the Ph.D. program of the English department. Read more.
