If someone did not know the Rev. Andrew Schramm and you wanted to give the person an idea of what Schramm was like, show the person the photo that was on Tuesday's Page One, accompanying the story about Schramm's death.

That photo, showing him working with Samantha Diedrich at Westminster Preschool a couple of years ago, tells so much about Andy Schramm.

If he thought he could help, he helped. Whether through a kind word, prayer or rolling up his sleeves and doggedly pursuing a goal, Andy Schramm did more than just care. He cared andacted.

He was the best kind of leader, one who led through being a servant. He graced so many organizations with his time and talents - his church, Westminster Presbyterian, and its preschool, Family Service Society, St. Martin Community Center, the Court Appointed Special Advocate program, Marion Rotary Club, Marion Ministerial Association, uncounted numbers of families and children and the community in general.

To know Andy Schramm was to know a man of both grace and strength, who could both laugh and cry with people and also listen with his heart as well as his ears.

His eyes were kind and his voice was gentle, but his faith and determination were strong and unswerving.

If young Samantha Diedrich doesn't yet know how fortunate she is to have had contact with Andy Schramm, she will one of these days. Andy touched many lives, young and old, and he left our part of the world better than it was when he arrived
