Alpha Phi Alpha celebrates 35th anniversary

Monday April 17, 2006

More than 60 alumni members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. gathered at the Park Plaza Hotel, Oshkosh, for a 35th Anniversary celebration on March 25. A banquet that evening honored the chapter's founders.

The turnout proved to be remarkable. Of 103 alumni members invited, 58 percent attended.

The chapter, Eta Pi, was founded in 1971 as one of the many chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Seven founders were present: Henry Clay, Dennis Bedford, Gerald Malone, Kenneth Owens, Lonnie Woods, Donald Glisper, and Vel Summers.

The other five founders were unable to attend: Charles Kimble, Ernest Abbott, Louis DeSliva, Willie Mitchell, and Carl Carroll. All founders were honored with a plaque.

This year marks the 100th Centennial Anniversary of the fraternity as the first intercollegiate African American fraternity. It was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1906.

A PBS documentary honoring the fraternity is currently being aired across the country. For more information and to check local PBS listings, visit www.alphaphialpha.net/centennial/documentary.htm.
