RACINE - Domingo M. Fernandez, 87, passed away at his residence on Monday, April 6, 2009. He was born in Crystal City, Texas on February 6, 1922, son of the late Genaro and Narcisia (nee: Mireles) Fernandez. Domingo served honorably in the United States Army and then relocated to Racine after the war. Domingo was employed for many years at J.I. Case and also worked at the Racine Spanish Center and the Racine Urban League. He is survived by his daughters, Yolanda (Alfredo) Trinidad, Jane Trinidad, Esther (Jose E.) Ramirez, Olga (Sirildo) Sabala, all of Racine, and Connie (Donald) Tenuta of Las Vegas, Nev.; and his sons, Sam (Karen) Fernandez, Arthur Fernandez, Jessie (Janet) Fernandez, Domingo (Geralyn) Fernandez Jr., and Daniel Fernandez, all of Racine. He is further survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Margarita (nee: Perez) Fernandez; grandson, Rueben Trinidad; and daughter-in-law, Linda Fernandez. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2009. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Holy Cross Cemetery in Caledonia. EAST LANSING - Eastside's John Mireles scored a first-period goal, and goalie Jonathan Sheets made it stand up as the Stars handed Grand Ledge/Waverly its first defeat of the season, 1-0, in the CAAC Varsity Hockey Showcase on Saturday at Suburban Ice.
The riveting contest was the first of five games in the third annual all-day event, and it kept Eastside's slim league title hopes alive.
Grand Ledge/Waverly outshot Eastside 22-13 in the game, which Stars coach Travis Van Tighem said was a stark contrast to the last meeting - a 6-2 Comet-Warrior win on Wednesday.
"The difference in this game is that our guys came mentally prepared," he said. "They did a better job of knowing what they had to do, playing as a unit. And we got some big saves from our goalie, and that always helps."
Mireles scored the game's only goal on a 2-on-1 breakaway by the Stars with 2:56 left in the first period. Teaming with Billy Daniels, Mirales beat Grand Ledge/Waverly goalie Austin Hull.
Eastside (9-4-1, 8-3 CAAC) had a chance to double its lead with 6:38 left in the second period, when Daniels stole the puck at his own blueline on a Comet-Warrior power play, skated in on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot after being taken down from behind. Daniels missed the net high on Hull's glove side.
Seconds later, Grand Ledge/Waverly (15-1, 8-1) thought it had tied the game, but the whistle blew for an Eastside penalty moments before a loose puck was poked into the Stars' net, nullifying the apparent goal.
The Comet-Warriors pressed for the equalizer and had several close calls, the last and perhaps best of which came with 3:15 remaining in the game. The puck squirted loose from a goal-mouth scramble across the front of the net, but nobody could reach it before it rolled wide of the post.
Sheets, who made 22 saves, said his team's previous loss provided added motivation for the rematch.
"I played like garbage the other night," he said. "I knew I could play better. And as a team, we played better."
Grand Ledge/Waverly coach Brian Clifford lamented his team's missed scoring opportunities.
"Their goalie certainly played well and made some key saves, but we were a little unlucky tonight," Clifford said. "We had chances. The puck was bouncing around every which way, it just didn't pop in."

Rev. Trinette V. McCray of Milwaukee will present the keynote address, "Inspiration of Dreams; Responsibilities of Change," at the 24th annual Dane County-City of Madison Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Observance on Jan. 19.
McCray, an advocate for those living in poverty or in a domestic violence situation, was the first clergywoman to be elected president of the American Baptist Churches.
The observance ceremony, one in a full weekend of activities sponsored by the King Coalition, will start at 6 p.m. at the Overture Center's Capitol Theater, 201 State St. Admission is free and open to all.
The event will feature the presentation of the Dane County Martin Luther King Awards by Kathleen Falk.

Chrismas Eve Party at Carlos & Mary's house is cancelled
Due to the impending storm we have decided to cancelled the Christmas Party.
Carlos and Mary will be heading to the Kalahari Water Park on Friday January 16, 2009, where they can rent a room and have four free waterpark passes as part of the "Don White Block"
The cost is only $109 plus tax per night-good for up to four people in a room. Typically it is $250 a night.
The price includes water park passes for both friday (starting at noon) and Saturday (until 3pm)
